Accomplishments

Since its formation in 2000, the Spanish Lake Community Association has:
    • Purchased the historic Twillman House at Bellefontaine and Redman Roads – the building will be renovated as a Community Center for the residents of our unincorporated community.
    • Spent $400,000 to date on The Twillman House Renovation project, much of it in donations from unions and individuals, grants from foundations and Community Development Block grants from St. Louis County. A new highly efficient heating and cooling system (HVAC) was installed in 2008 and the building is now warm in the winter and cool in the summer!
    • Launched the Spanish Lake Website (www.spanishlakemo.org) which will provide all residents with up-to-date news and information about our community.
    • Awarded a grant from Team St. Louis to design, purchase and install 2 Welcome to Spanish Lake signs on Bellefontaine Road, north of I-270, and Columbia Bottom Road in Spanish Lake.
    • Established the Spanish Lake Youth and Family Council to work collaboratively with St. Louis County and other agencies to increase support services for families and opportunities for youth outside of school hours.
    • Received a $15,000 Lewis and Clark grant from the Missouri Department of Conservation that resulted in $75,000 worth of improvements at Fort Belle Fontaine County Park in Spanish Lake.
    • Worked closely with the County’s Neighborhood Preservation Department to identify and improve hundreds of problem properties in our community.
    • Monitored the Spanish Lake Community Association’s Voice Mail, responding to a wide variety of questions and concerns from residents.
    • Increased membership of business owners and managers in the Spanish Lake Community Association and began bi-monthly networking meetings of the Spanish Lake Community Association Business Members' Group.
    • Distributed over 1,850 Welcome Packets to new homeowners in Spanish Lake.
    • Sponsored, with the Hazelwood School District, Youth and Family Resource Fairs in the spring to inform residents about programs available to youth outside of school hours and also services available in our community for families.
    • Worked collaboratively with many other groups to support wise development in our community and elsewhere in North St. Louis County – North County Incorporated, Greater North County Chamber of Commerce, Watkins Creek Watershed Task Force, Friends of Fort Belle Fontaine Park, Spanish Lake Enhancement Committee, Trinity Catholic High School and Hazelwood School District.
    • Turned a derelict vacant lot at Trampe and Larimore into the award-winning Spanish Lake Community Garden recognized as the Best Garden Tended by a Group in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Great Gardens Contest.
    • Worked with many other groups to stop the development of a proposed 186–bay truck stop at Lilac & I-270.
    • Participated in St. Louis County’s I-270/Highway 367 Corridor Study.
    • Sponsored regular Town Hall meetings for residents and published the association’s quarterly newsletter, the Spanish Lake News.
    • Worked with the County to study strategies for future reinvestment in our businesses. The Bellefontaine Road Commercial Improvement Plan is the result of that study and it was approved by the St. Louis County Council in 2008. Businesses on the South Node have begun meeting to implement that study.
